Hot Tub Weekly Checklist

A hot tub is a small volume of very hot, heavily-used water, so chemistry moves fast. Test often, keep the filter clean, and look after the cover — it does more for your heat bill and water quality than anything else.

Test & sanitize

Test sanitizer and pH before heavy use and at least weekly — hot water burns through sanitizer far faster than a pool. Hot tub chemical calculator
Keep bromine or chlorine in the spa's target range. Bromine holds up better than chlorine in hot water and is gentler on skin, which is why most spas run it.
Bring pH into the 7.2-7.6 range — hot, aerated water drives pH up quickly. pH calculator

Clean

Rinse the filter cartridge under a hose to clear body oils and lotion; rotate a spare so one can fully dry.
Wipe the waterline scum band where oils collect at the surface.
Skim out any debris and check the water level covers the intakes so the pump does not draw air.

Cover & check

Wipe down and inspect the cover — a waterlogged or torn cover wastes heat and lets light feed algae.
